The students participating in the Transition Academy are about to embark on a new and exciting post-secondary experience as they will enroll at GateWay Community College. This has been in the works for over a year, and now with the support of President Steve Gonzales and the coordinating efforts of Kristen Gubser and Frank Zamora, we are ready to embark on this challenging educational endeavor.
We have established a non-credit certificate program in Independent Living Skills and Career Development. The program is four semesters in duration and the class offerings for fall 2015 are as follows: Advocacy 1, Personal Safety 1, Conflict Resolution 1, Interpersonal Relations 1, Food and Nutrition 1, Transition 1 and Career Education 1. Brad Herron has been hired as the Adjunct Professor and will provide instruction in all of these classes. Our students will receive in-class accommodations as may be required and we will assist them in out-of-class supports as needed.
The Transition Students will have the opportunity to participate in all of the aspects of college life at GateWay and we are anxious for them to enroll in any of the other class offerings at the college or at Maricopa Skills Center, which is an integral occupational program at GateWay. This program is open to other individuals with Autism not enrolled in the First Place Transition Academy. For more information, please contact: Jeff Ross, Program Director, at 602-733-6525.
